How to log into your virtual machine with PuTTY (for windows users)

Prerequisites:

  • You must have an  NJRCloud registered virtual machine. After the instance creation, you will receive your connection information for SSH and HTTP (web) access to your instances.
  • Putty software installed in your Windows machine. PuTTY is a free SSH client, that can be installed on your Windows computer to access your virtual machines in OMegha Cloud platform. You can download the software from here.

Converting Your Private Key Using PuTTYgen

The private key file [.pem file] you’ve downloaded after instance creation needs to be converted into a .ppk to be used for connecting through PuTTY. For this we can use the tool PuTTYgen which will be installed along with PuTTY in the latest versions. To do that,

  • Start PuTTYgen (From the Start menu, search for PuTTYgen).
  • Under Type of key to generate, select SSH-2 RSA.

  • Click Load. By default, PuTTYgen displays only files with the extension .ppk. To locate your .pem file, select the option to display files of all types.
  • Select your .pem file for the key pair that was downloaded after you launched your instance, and then click OK.

  • Click OK to dismiss the confirmation dialog box.
  • Click on Save Private key to generate the new .ppk file that can be used to access the newly created instance.

Starting the PuTTY Session

  • Start PuTTY (from the Start menu, search for PuTTY).
  • In the Category pane, select Session and complete the following fields:
  1. Hostname (or IP address)
  2. Private key [expand Connection, expand SSH, and then select Auth]

  • Click Browse.
  • Select the .ppk file that you generated for your key pair, and then click Open.

  • Click Open to start the PuTTY session.
  • Provide user name.
  • If this is the first time you have connected to this instance, PuTTY displays a security alert dialog box that asks whether you trust the host you are connecting to.
  • Click Yes. A window opens and you are connected to your instance.
